With the help of his family and influence of generations before him, Josh Davis raises Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW) beef cattle and pigs at Frolona Farm in Franklin, Georgia. Located about 65 miles southwest of Atlanta, the farm has been in the family for over 180 years; the farmhouse, which was built in the 1880s, along with the old general store and other lapboard buildings on the grounds, are tangible reminders of the rich history of the land and the commitment of the Davis family to stewardship and sustainable management for the future.
The beef cattle at Frolona Farm are rotationally managed, grazing one section of pasture before being moved to fresh fields. This type of management allows grass to recover before cows return to graze again; it also keeps the soil properly fertilized and minimizes the build-up of internal parasites, thereby avoiding reliance on chemical treatments. Managing cattle using rotational grazing practices outdoors on pasture, where the animals can demonstrate their natural behaviors, is foundational to Frolona Farm’s production methods. “We support a natural environment in which our animals can thrive,” says Josh. This type of management is not only better for the health and welfare of the cattle, but it also benefits the health of humans and the environment—all while producing delicious beef that keeps Frolona Farm’s customers coming back for more!
The Mulefoot, Tamworth, Large Black and Berkshire pigs at Frolona Farm are raised outdoors, where they are free to root and forage as pigs naturally do. This high-welfare management is a fundamental component of AGW certification and is known to have environmental, nutritional and culinary benefits. “Our traditional breed pigs live in the woods, wallow in water and forage on roots and nuts,” says Josh. “The traditional breeds tend to forage much more than conventional breeds, and this varied diet lends itself to a tastier, healthier meat.”
